Your SAT score can range anywhere
from a 600 on the very lowest end, to a 2400 on the very highest end
since each SAT section (Critical Reading, Writing, and Mathematics)
is worth between 200 and 800 points a piece In order to get into
some of the top ranked college and universities in the country, such
as Princeton, Harvard or Yale; you will have to be in the 90th
percentile, which would mean a score of 2100 or above on all three
parts. In 2010, students who take the test multiple times can
actually choose which scores are reported to the universities with
an option called
*Score Choice,
so they will have the ability to knock out the scores that did not
make the cut.
*The score choice policy for the SAT is a new policy College Board released in 2010 which lets students hide bad scores from universities and colleges. Score Choice permits students to send only their best overall score from a given test date. So students can take tests repeatedly with no apparent penalty, but beware! Colleges and universities can opt out of Score Choice and require applicants to report every SAT score. And some colleges have now decided to do so, such as Stanford, Cornell, Pomona, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Southern California to name a few.
The required portion of the ACT is
divided into four multiple choice subject tests: English,
mathematics, reading, and science reasoning. Subject test scores
range from 1 to 36; all scores are integers. The English,
mathematics, and reading tests also have sub scores ranging from 1
to 18. (The subject score is not the sum of the sub scores.) The
composite score is the average of all four tests. In addition,
students taking the writing test receive a writing score ranging
from 2 to 12, a combined English/writing score ranging from 1 to 36
(based on the writing score and English score), and one to four
comments on the essay from the essay scorers. The writing score does
not affect the composite score.
On the ACT, each question correctly answered is worth one raw point.
Unlike the SAT, there is no penalty for marking incorrect answers on
the multiple-choice part of the test. Therefore, a student can
answer all questions without suffering a decrease in their score for
questions they answer incorrectly.
